Bran Castle

Bran Castle is the only landmark that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists because of a legend :Count Dracula’s Legend.

Bran Castle, one of the most valuable medieval architectural monuments in Romania, with its historic, military and economic significance, is known by tourists across the globe as Dracula’s Castle.

Bran Castle was originally a stronghold built by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1212. It was known by the name of Dietrichstein at the time.

Later on, towards the end of the 13th century, it was taken over by the Saxons in that region in order
to protect the City of Brasov, an important trade center, against invading Turks.

The castle has four towers, the Powder House Tower is the oldest, it is part of the original castle built in 1212.

The castle had a protective and commercial purpose. It had two rows of walls closing the passing towards South. They were made in stone and brick. Only few traces of the initial defense position still exist.

Bran is a town nestled in a mountain pass between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului ranges and during the 15th and 16th centuries was an important frontier town on the main road leading from Transylvania into Wallachia.

On December 1st, 1920, the Brasov Town Council donated the Bran Castle to Queen Marie of Romania, who lived there with the royal family till 1947.

Queen Marie held the castle as her second favourite residence after the one in Balcic.

Rasnov Fortress

Rasnov Fortress

Rasnov Fortress
Rasnov Fortress

Rasnov Fortress , is located on a rocky hilltop in the

Carpathian mountains, 200m above the town of Rasnov.

The saxon tradition says that the oldest part of the fortress was built by the Teutonic Knights (1211-1225).

Rasnov Fortress was built in the 14th century to protect the people of Rasnov and surrounding villages from the numerous invasions happening at the time.

This castle differs from some in that it was meant to be a place of refuge for the commoners from sieges over extended periods of time. As such it had at least 30 houses, a school, a chapel, and other buildings more commonly associated with a village.

The legend around the fountain says that during a siege, the inhabitants of the citadel made two Turkish prisoners dig a fountain in the middle of the citadel in order to regain their freedom. The captives dug for 17 years, during which time they wrote verses from Quran on the fountain's walls which can be seen even today. The fate of the prisoners isn't doubtless, some saying that they've been released, and others that they've been killed.

An important moment in the history of the Rasnov town is the glorious moment in the history of the Romanians, that is the unification of the three Romanian lands under the rule of lord Mihai Viteazul. In the period between 1600 and 1601, the town Rasnov provided accommodation for Mihai Viteazul and his wife, Lady Stanca.

The view from the top of the castle hill is spectacular.

Peles Castle

Peles Castle

Peles Castle
Peles Castle

The castle is considered by many one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe  and in the world .

Peles Castle was built by the prince Carol I de Hohenzollern, who was to become a king as a summer royal residence, on Peles Valley, in 1883.

Peles Castle was the first castle in Europe with central heating and electricity.

Peles Castle was built in wood, stone, bricks and marble and comprises more than 160 rooms. The representative style used is German Renaissance, but one can easily discover elements belonging to the Italian Renaissance, Gothic, German Baroque and French Rococo style.

Rembrandt reproductions line the walls of the king's office at Peles Castle while rows of books in the library conceals a secret passage leading to the 2nd floor of the castle. There is also a gallery of mirrors, and dining room has a leather clad ceiling. In the Florence hall, Michelangelo's reproductions hang below a ceiling carved from glide linden wood.  The Venetian room is equally impressive.

Peles Castle is surrounded by seven terraces decorated with statues (sculptured by the Italian, Romanelli), stone-made-wells, ornamental vases and Carara marble. The architects used an abundance of wooden decoration, both for the exterior and for the interior of the castle, which confers a very special quality to the building.

Also  Peles Castle shelters one of the most important and most valuable painting collections in Europe, almost 2.000 pieces.

The location of Peles Castle complete the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.

Sinaia Monastery
Sinaia Monastery

The Sinaia Monastery, located in Sinaia, was founded by Prince Mihail Cantacuzino in 1695.

It was designed to serve as a monastery as well as a fortified stronghold on the route from Brasov to Bucharest. This was the first electric lighted place of worship in Romania.

The monastery consists of two courtyards surrounded by low buildings. In the centre of each courtyard there is a small church built in the Byzantine style.

One of them—"Biserica Veche" (The Old Church)—dates from 1695, while the more recent "Biserica Mare" (The Great Church) was built in 1846.

The restoration of the Old Church was completed in 2006. The painting on the porch and the open hallway are original, made by Parvu Mutu, the favourite painter of the Cantacuzinos. The chapel was built in 1695. Its size and more than 300 years old, blackened paintings evoke the religious creeps of the catacombs in the early years of Christianity.

The Great Church was built in between 1842-1846. In 1892 the Bell Tower was added. The paintings are painted on gold mosaic - typical for the neo-Byzantine style.

These paintings were done by the Danish artist Aage Exner. They show Queen Elisabeth and her daughter Mary who died at a young age, and Mihai Cantacuzino, the founder of the church. The furniture is carved wood, the altar screen, the furniture of the nave and the two thrones are gold plated. The king's throne has the royal emblem and the writing Nihil sine Deo (Nothing without God). The queen's throne has the letters E.D. embossed.

The church has lovely ornamentation that is embellished with enameled bricks and with painted niches (which are placed on the outside of the main church).
