Peles Castle

Peles Castle

Peles Castle
Peles Castle

The castle is considered by many one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe and in the world .

Peles Castle was built by the prince Carol I de Hohenzollern, who was to become a king as a summer royal residence, on Peles Valley, in 1883.

Peles Castle was the first castle in Europe with central heating and electricity.

Peles Castle was built in wood, stone, bricks and marble and comprises more than 160 rooms. The representative style used is German Renaissance, but one can easily discover elements belonging to the Italian Renaissance, Gothic, German Baroque and French Rococo style.

Rembrandt reproductions line the walls of the king's office at Peles Castle while rows of books in the library conceals a secret passage leading to the 2nd floor of the castle. There is also a gallery of mirrors, and dining room has a leather clad ceiling. In the Florence hall, Michelangelo's reproductions hang below a ceiling carved from glide linden wood. The Venetian room is equally impressive.

Peles Castle is surrounded by seven terraces decorated with statues (sculptured by the Italian, Romanelli), stone-made-wells, ornamental vases and Carara marble. The architects used an abundance of wooden decoration, both for the exterior and for the interior of the castle, which confers a very special quality to the building.

Also Peles Castle shelters one of the most important and most valuable painting collections in Europe, almost 2.000 pieces.

The location of Peles Castle complete the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.

Pelisor Castle

Almost adjacent to Peles Castle is Pelisor ("Little Peles").

The castle it was built in 1899–1903 by the order of King Carol I, as the residence for his nephew and heir, the future King Ferdinand (son of Carol's brother Leopold von Hohenzollern) and Ferdinand's consort Queen Marie.

King Ferdinand, who succeeded Carol I, intended to use Peles Castle as a summer residence. Supposedly he found Peles too big and overwhelming, so he commissioned the smaller, art-nouveau style, Pelisor Castle.

Pelisor has 70 rooms and feature a unique collection of Viennese furniture and Tiffany and Lalique glassware.

The castle reflects the astonishing personal style of Queen Maria. The walls of the reception room are covered with oak timber; the gilded sculpted wood , Golden Room design as well and the working cabinet was created by the queen herself.

The thistle which is the floral emblem of Scotland reminds, her birthplace and is also present on the wall of the golden room.

Sinaia Monastery
Sinaia Monastery

The Sinaia Monastery, located in Sinaia, was founded by Prince Mihail Cantacuzino in 1695.

It was designed to serve as a monastery as well as a fortified stronghold on the route from Brasov to Bucharest. This was the first electric lighted place of worship in Romania.

The monastery consists of two courtyards surrounded by low buildings. In the centre of each courtyard there is a small church built in the Byzantine style.

One of them—"Biserica Veche" (The Old Church)—dates from 1695, while the more recent "Biserica Mare" (The Great Church) was built in 1846.

The restoration of the Old Church was completed in 2006. The painting on the porch and the open hallway are original, made by Parvu Mutu, the favourite painter of the Cantacuzinos. The chapel was built in 1695. Its size and more than 300 years old, blackened paintings evoke the religious creeps of the catacombs in the early years of Christianity.

The Great Church was built in between 1842-1846. In 1892 the Bell Tower was added. The paintings are painted on gold mosaic - typical for the neo-Byzantine style.

These paintings were done by the Danish artist Aage Exner. They show Queen Elisabeth and her daughter Mary who died at a young age, and Mihai Cantacuzino, the founder of the church. The furniture is carved wood, the altar screen, the furniture of the nave and the two thrones are gold plated. The king's throne has the royal emblem and the writing Nihil sine Deo (Nothing without God). The queen's throne has the letters E.D. embossed.

The church has lovely ornamentation that is embellished with enameled bricks and with painted niches (which are placed on the outside of the main church).
