Salt Mine

Known as the biggest salt mine in Europe, Slanic Prahova stands today for one of the most important watering and climatic resorts in Romania.

After 1970 the mine became a tourist attraction.

Muntele de Sare (The Salt Mountain), unique in the entire world, Grota Miresei (The Bride’s Cave), Baia Baciului (The Shepherd’s Lake), Baia Verde (The Green Lake) and Salina Unirea (Unirea Salt Mine) are just some of the resort’s attractions, which, according to the documents, for more than 300 years represented an important salt extraction center.

The mine consists of 14 trapezoid- shaped rooms with a ten-meter ceiling and thirty and thirty-two-meter floor width.

The height of  the rooms is of fifty-four meters and the wal inclination angle is of 60 degrees.

The access into the mine is done by two elevators that make the transport of the visitors possible.

The way down with the elevator is 208 meters long and it lasts almost 3 minutes.

Cheia Monastery

Key Monastery, a monastery of monks dedicated to the Holy Trinity is located  in a small depression in the foothills Ciucaş in a wonderful natural environment,on the right bank of the river Tampa and close to Bratocea Passage which used to delineate Wallachia from Transylvania. It played an important role in maintaining brotherly relations between Romanians on both sides of the Carpathian Mountains as it offered shelter and peace of mind to Transylvanian Romanians.

First attested in 1770, it was destroyed by the Ottomans, then ravaged by fire. The current church was built of stone between 1835 and 1839 and painted by Gheorghe Tattarescu in 1837.

The large church of the monastery, built of brick and stone, has a trefoil shape. The nave, which rises above, the four arcs with different openings, but with the same height, the tower of wood, the narthex is separated by two brick pillars that make up three arches.

Carved and gilded wooden iconostasis, a remarkable work of art was designed by Viennese baroque masters, is worthy donation Chesarie Bishop of Buzau.

Royal icons, of great beauty, are the work of the famous Romanian painter Gheorghe Tattărăscu.

Suzana Monastery

Suzana Monastery, which stands in magnificent scenery, was founded in 1740 and rebuilt in 1835-1838, with icons by Tattarescu.

This monastery now has 62 nuns who share in community prayer and work.

The monastery bears the name of its founder: Stanca Arsicu from Brasov, who received the name Suzana at the time of her entry into the monastic life.

Suzana Church impresses by icons dressed in gilded silver. The floor is made of boards and the roof is made of tin. The oil painting is made in the church and bears the signature of master Peter Nicolau from Ploiesti, one of the best students of the great painter George Tattarescu.

The inner courtyard of the monastery was ample, but the buildings are closely connected to each other, composing a compact space, designed to last. The free space is paved with stone slabs.

In the monastery is found a museum containing a collection of icons painted on wood and glass wrapped in plated silver, religious objects and many old books.
