Sibiu
Sibiu
Known in German under the name Hermannstadt, Sibiu has always been the most important center of the German minority in Transylvania. Nowadays, Sibiu has the most numerous German community in Romania but also a fairly important Hungarian community.

At the end of the 18th century the governor of Transylvania Samuel von Brukenthal had gathered an impressive library and rich art collections, mentioned since 1773 in the Almanach von Wien.

The collections were opened to the public in 1817 and became later the core of Brukenthal Museum.Todayis said to be the second best museum in Romania (after the National Art Museum in the capital Bucharest), containing 1090 paintings.

Around the middle of the 19th century the Romanian population became more and more present in the life of the town, become the spiritual centre of the Romanians’ struggle for political emancipation.

The name of the city is officially changed into Sibiu in 1919.

Nowadays, Sibiu presents itself as a true cultural and touristic capital of Romania, due to the wonderful beauties of its surroundings, and due to charming natural landscape.

At its centre are three squares , Piata MarewithRoman Catholic church andthe Brukenthal Palace. The square is linked to Piata Mica by a passage beneath the Council Tower, which is worth visiting for the excellent views over the town. The third square, Piata Huet, is dominated by the Evangelical Cathedral.

Sighisoara
Sighisoara

Sighisoara is considered to be the most beautiful and well preserved inhabited citadels in Europe with an authentic medieval architecture. In Eastern Europe, Sighisoara is one of the few fortified towns which are still inhabited.

Sighisoara was built by the Saxons between the 12th and the 17th centuries.

The Wallachian prince Vlad Tepes, Vlad Dracul's son, was born here in 1431.

His father minted coins in the town and issued the first document listing the town's Romanian name Sighisoara.

Landmark of Sighisoara, the Clock Tower is the most impressive and picturesque if it's towers.

It was built in the second half of the 14th century and expanded to 64m height in the 16th century.

Near the tower  is the central Piata Cetatii, surrounded by attractive 16th century houses.

On  of the neigbouring streets is the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. It is now a very unsinister
restaurant.

One of the nicest things in Sighisoara is to walk the long and narrow cobbled streets lined with faded pink, green, and ocher houses. Each house deserves a look as each one of them is different than the others and has something worth seeing.
