Transfagarasan

Transfagarasan Highway is the most famous road in Romania with a fantastic landscape. The road was constructed between 1970 and 1974 and it is the road that climbs to the highest altitude in Romania, 2042 meters, in the Glacial Hollow Balea.

About 3 million tones of hard rocks were dislocated, 830 transverse works and 290 000 cubic meters of masonry were made for building those 92 kilometers of road. The road has more tunnels and viaducts than any other road in Romania.

On the highest point of the Transfagarasan near Balea Lac (Balea-lake) is located the longest (ca. 875 m), and highest tunnel of Romania. This tunnel is the connection between Transsylvania and Walachia.

The most spectacular route is from the North. It is a winding road, dotted with steep hairpin turns, long l S-shaped curves and steep descents combined with an absolutely stunning view. In September 2009, the crew  "Top Gear"  was in Romania  ,they filmed and tested this road –Transfagarasan.

Jeremy Clarkson, the Top Gear host, had said about Transfăgărășan that " is the best road (driving road) in the world"
So Transfagarasan was classified as the most beautiful road in the world.

Vlad Tepes

The Real Dracula's Castle

The Real Dracula's Castle
The Real Dracula's Castle Poienari

Who was Vlad Tepes ?

VLAD TEPES - The Impaler (DRACULA),Prince of Wallachia (1448,1456-1462,1476),son of Vlad Dracul (Knight of the Order of the Dragon- since his nickname Dracul, meaning 'dragon', 'devil' in Romanian-in 1431) and Grandson of Mircea the Elder, King of Wallahia (1386-1418).

If there is a castle in Romania which should be called "Dracula's castle", this is the one - Poienari Fortress.

Located just north of Curtea de Arges, the Poienari Fortress is a historical landmark dating back to the 13th. The first Romanian rulers of Wallachia built the Poenari fortress . We are talking about the rectangular tower.

Then, over time, the castle was left in ruins.
Realizing the potential of a castle perched on a steep precipice of rock ,Vlad Tepes rebuilt and strengthened the castle in the 15th century , making it one of his main fortresses.

Vlad Tepes introduced a very strict order in Wallachia, strengthened the army, helped the trade with the neighboring countries and was merciless towards those who went against him. He adopted a totalitarian leadership and fought against The Ottoman Empire scoring many victories.

To reach the top of Poenari Castle, you need to climb 1,480 steps.

Amazing views are waiting for you.

Bran Castle

Bran Castle is the only landmark that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists because of a legend :Count Dracula’s Legend.

Bran Castle, one of the most valuable medieval architectural monuments in Romania, with its historic, military and economic significance, is known by tourists across the globe as Dracula’s Castle.

Bran Castle was originally a stronghold built by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1212. It was known by the name of Dietrichstein at the time.

Later on, towards the end of the 13th century, it was taken over by the Saxons in that region in order
to protect the City of Brasov, an important trade center, against invading Turks.

The castle has four towers, the Powder House Tower is the oldest, it is part of the original castle built in 1212.

The castle had a protective and commercial purpose. It had two rows of walls closing the passing towards South. They were made in stone and brick. Only few traces of the initial defense position still exist.

Bran is a town nestled in a mountain pass between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului ranges and during the 15th and 16th centuries was an important frontier town on the main road leading from Transylvania into Wallachia.

On December 1st, 1920, the Brasov Town Council donated the Bran Castle to Queen Marie of Romania, who lived there with the royal family till 1947.

Queen Marie held the castle as her second favourite residence after the one in Balcic.
