The journey begins with a drive towards the Transfagarasan, a high-altitude road crossing the Fagaras Mountains. Known for its curves, tunnels, and dramatic views, this route offers constant photo opportunities.
Along the way, several stops allow you to enjoy panoramic landscapes, alpine valleys, and the changing scenery as you climb higher into the mountains.
One of the first major stops is Balea Waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Romania. Located at the base of the mountain, it marks the entrance to the alpine zone.
A short walk leads to viewpoints where you can observe the waterfall and surrounding cliffs, especially impressive during spring and early summer.
Continue the ascent to Balea Lake, a glacial lake situated at over 2,000 meters altitude. Surrounded by mountain peaks, the area offers a strong alpine atmosphere.
Here you can walk around the lake, take photos, or relax while enjoying the landscape. The location changes with the seasons, from green alpine fields to a colder, dramatic setting later in the year.
